Abstract Peiping Opera, a traditional performance art in China, is now still active in the Chinese community. It combines various forms of arts, with percussion as its center of supporting dramatic performances. Percussion not only liks but also leads such performances as singing, recitation, action, and fighting. The writer believes that without the help of percussion Peiping Opera, which is a very abstract of art, can not expresses in depth the sensational feeling of rejoicing, anger, sadness, or happiness of the human beings. In this paper the writer adopts some operas which have been performed at the stage as the cases for studying, and analyze the rhythmic texture and application of the percussion in their performances. The writer wishes that this paper would help people more understand the artistic value of the Peiping Opera, and provide others a reference for further study or other uses. The writer concludes that the percussion can be characterized by following points: 1. Rich in sonic effect. 2. Rich in colorful rhythm. 3. Variable moods creatable. 4. The tempo of the performance is followed duely. 5. Many derivatives can be made from one basic type. 6. Familiar materials can be used variably. 7. Percussion for other types of Chinese opera are often used too.
