Abstract Summerhill was founded by A. S. Neill in 1921, who was a Progressive humanistic thinker and educator. The school is situated within the village of Leiston, Suffolk in England. "To make the school fit the child-instead of making the child fit the school" is one main idea of Summerhill. The basic principle of self-determination is the replacement of authority by freedom, democracy and love. The children in Summerhill enjoy the life without appealing to teachers" authority, their spontaneous needs was praised, and thus to get them interested in the world around him. The purposes of this study are: 1. To understand the education idea of Summerhill School. 2. To state and Criticize the educational ideas and practices of Smmerhill School. 3. To analyze the implications of child education in Taiwan. The major findings and suggestions are summerized as followed: (1)To reconstruct the idea of child guidance for educators. (2) The guidance for living: ①To provide to children a safe and happy surrounding. ②To develop the responsible attitude toward works under the principles of interest and need. ③To give children enought space and opportunities for playing. ④To apply the principles of group guidance. ⑤To get good communications between the teachers and the students. (3)The guidance for learning: ①To give a open and warm learning climate. ②To set up the individualized learning. ③To build up a "family-grouping" learning model. ④To arrange the program of "reading-record". ⑤To put the multiple evaluation into practice. (4)The practice of creative teaching: ①To carry out creative education must be given Students freedom and trust. ②To abandon authority instead of warm, respect and empathy. ③To urge the creative art education. ④To set up selves-government activities for students.
