英文摘要
The paper consists of four main parts: I.Introduction This part
explores the reasons why Kuang Yun was adopted as the main material for studying
medieval Chinese sounds and why Chen Li's approach of associating the itemized
illustrations has been indispensable to the study of Kuang Yun. II. A study of
Chen Li's Association of the Itemiaed Illustrations of the Upper Character and
the lower Character of the Sound Spelling Out System by Confluent Consonants and
Syllabary in Kuang Yun This part first makes a biographical sketch of Chen Li
and next introduces the different approaches to the study of the sound spelling
out system of Kunag Yun. Then, it goes on to investigate how most textbooks and
college/university teachers have approached the itemized illustrations. In
addition, the part tries to explore in more detail the itemized illustrations of
the upper and lower characters. For the upper characters, it discussed the
rationales of the itemized illustrations, the practical instances of connecting
the itemized illustrations of the upper and lower ch aracters, and the findings
made by Professor Chen Hsin-hsiung in his Supplemental Instances and the
associating efforts made by numberous other linguists. For the lower characters,
this part explores the rationales of the itemized illustrations, Professor Chen
Hsin-Hsiung's Supplemental Instances, the associating methods and examples by
using the xonfluent consonants and syllabary of the incomplete chapters of Chieh
Yun; and the connecting efforts of the sound spelling out system of Kuang Yun
made by numberous other linguists. III. Critiques on Chen Approach of
Associating Itemized Illustrations of the Upper Character and the Lower
Character This part discusses the critiques on Chen Lis' approach of associating
itemized illustrations made by Tung Tung-su, and Hsieh Yun-Fei. The criticism
made by them mainly include three points: 1) the impossibility of being precise
of the confluent consonants and syllabary has resulted in the impossibility of
being perfect of the connecting approach; 2) the drawbacks of Chen Li's Approach
of associating itemized illustrations; and 3) the necessity of combined use of
other related materials in making the association. IV. conclusion It is found in
this paper that Chen Li's approach of associating item illustrations is a key to
understanding Kuang Yun. the systematic, comprehensive and indepth study of the
item illustrations and other relevant issues that have been made in this paper
is definitely helpful to those bent on studying Kuang Yun.
