Abstract The carved Chinese Characters on the earthwares of the Hsi-an sloping hill that were dug out during 1954-1957, bared some meaningful symbols at the beginning period of Chinese words. They surpassed the objective drawing grade, and entered the abstract symbolic design used for tribal mark and numbers. These dual functions were brought up from their life and custom, and initiated a kind of spiritual culture. We'll try to discuss Chinese Characters development through archaeology, rather than to deal with the earthware characters isolatedly. By this way, we hope the problem about the origin of Chinese Characters may be obtained a reasonable explanation. This paper includes four parts as below. 1.Foreword 2.Discovery of the earthware Characters -- site, earthware form, meaning, usage and custom, etc. 3. Discussion -- literal position of earthware words, relation with "the sixclasses", meaning and function. 4. Conclusion
