The main purposes of this article are as follows: 1) to introduce the history of teachers in U.S.from colonial period to nowadays, 2) to illustrate the effect of the history as mentioned on the teaching as a profession, and 3) to articulate the education initiates concerning improving the teacher quality since 1994, while Goals 2000: Educate America Act was issued.
The author wishes to help Taiwanese understand the history and problems of U.S.teacher education. Furthermore Taiwanese could make sense of the implications of those education initiatives implemented by American recently, especially those reforms to ameliorate the teacher quality. Even though Taiwan situates the area of cultural margin-we always follow the steps of U.S. in many aspects, Taiwanese should be proud of its tradition that school teachers are always respected by people highly. The quality of Taiwan's teachers is one of the best among all countries around the world.
